A bit about myself and my research...

I am a board-certified ophthalmologist with fellowship training in cornea and external diseases, and the associate medical director at the Iowa Lions Eye Bank. My research complements my practice as a cornea transplant surgeon and is focused on improving the quality and expanding the supply of donor corneal tissue.

In our lab, we study how well the cells in the cornea (the clear front part of the eye) work by looking at their energy production. We use special tests to see how these cells from different donors perform and why they might work differently. Our main goal is to find better ways to assess and maintain the health of these cells.

We also use our tests to study other things, like how diabetes affects corneal cells, how we can create new corneal cells, how different drugs impact these cells, and how to diagnose problems with cell energy production.

Support Dr. Greiner's Research

Philanthropic support has been particularly essential for funding the personnel who make up Dr. Greiner’s team. “Two-thirds of my budget is for our personnel, and not for my time or for the experiments,” Dr. Greiner explains. “Philanthropy helps us pay for these world-class researchers who are essential to our success.”

“There is no source of funding that is too small or too big to make this research go forward. Philanthropy helps us in so many ways, from jump-starting new ideas to filling the gaps where federal funds fall short.”
