The University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences is proud to welcome two outstanding physicians whose expertise and dedication will enrich both our patient care and educational missions.
Ferhat Evliyaoglu, MD, FACS joined the department on June 30, 2025, as a Clinical Assistant Professor specializing in pediatric ophthalmology. Dr. Evliyaoglu brings a wealth of experience from his time at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando, Florida, and an impressive academic background that spans continents. He completed his medical education at Hacettepe University in Turkey, followed by advanced training at Columbia University and Emory University. A fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the European Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Evliyaoglu has contributed significantly to the field through his research on pediatric ophthalmology and retinal diseases. His work, widely published in respected journals, reflects a deep commitment to advancing science and improving patient care. Beyond the clinic, he enjoys family time, traveling, and discovering new cultures—pursuits that mirror his curiosity and passion for lifelong learning.
Leigh Rettenmaier, MD joined the department on July 31, 2025, as a Clinical Assistant Professor in neuro-ophthalmology. A proud alumna of the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, Dr. Rettenmaier earned her medical degree with Distinction in Research before completing a neurology residency at Mass General Brigham/Harvard Medical School, where she served as Chief Resident. Most recently, she completed a clinical fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania. Known for her innovative approach to medical education, Dr. Rettenmaier has designed forward-thinking teaching curricula and clinical rotations for neurology residents. Her dedication to mentorship has already been recognized with the 2024 Brigham and Women’s Hospital Resident Teaching Award.
Together, Drs. Evliyaoglu and Rettenmaier represent the next generation of leaders in ophthalmology—bringing clinical excellence, research innovation, and a passion for education to the University of Iowa. Their arrival strengthens the department’s commitment to advancing eye care and preparing future ophthalmologists for success.
