Dr. Stephen Kraft, a distinguished pediatric ophthalmologist, has made significant contributions to the field of strabismus and pediatric ophthalmology. His journey began with his fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at the University of Iowa in 1982-83, under the mentorship of Bill Scott and the late Frank Judisch. Since 1984, Dr. Kraft has been practicing in Toronto, where he has become a prominent figure in his specialty. 

 

Career Highlights and Contributions 

Dr. Kraft is a Staff Ophthalmologist at the Hospital for Sick Children and a Professor of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences at the University of Toronto. His expertise in strabismus, binocular vision, and amblyopia has earned him international recognition. Over the years, he has authored or co-authored 121 peer-reviewed publications and 46 book chapters, and has given 402 presentations at various meetings and formal rounds. He has been an invited lecturer across the globe, including in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Spain, the United States, the Middle East, Singapore, India, Scandinavia, and South America. 

Dr. Kraft’s research interests focus on problems of eye muscle balance, binocular vision, and amblyopia in both children and adults. He has pioneered surgical approaches to treat unusual and difficult strabismus problems and has collaborated on numerous projects, including recent work on the success of adjustable suture eye muscle surgery and the prevention of infections after eye muscle surgery. 

 

Prestigious Honors 

In 2024, Dr. Kraft received two of the highest international honors in his field. In June, he delivered the 16th Alfred Bielschowsky Lecture at the International Strabismological Association (ISA) biennial meeting in Toulouse, France. This lecture is awarded to an internationally recognized strabismus expert who has made a significant impact in the field during their career. Dr. Kraft was the first Canadian to receive this honor. 

 

The following month, he was selected to give the Fifth Keynote Address in Strabismus at the World Congress of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (WCPOS) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This keynote address is awarded to a strabismus expert who has made a significant international impact through education, research, and clinical care. Dr. Kraft was the first Canadian to deliver this keynote address. 

 

A Legacy of Excellence 

Dr. Kraft’s achievements are a testament to his dedication and expertise. He is only the second strabismus specialist ever to be awarded both the Alfred Bielschowsky Lecture and the WCPOS Keynote Address. His contributions have not only advanced the field of pediatric ophthalmology but have also inspired many in the medical community. 

 

Reflecting on his career, Dr. Kraft acknowledges the profound influence of his training at the University of Iowa. He has maintained close ties with his mentors and colleagues, and cherishes the memories of his return visits for milestone events, including his William Scott Lecture.
